1970s Courthouse & Civil War Monument, Winchester Indiana
Winchester Landmarks – Randolph County Courthouse & Soldiers and Sailors Monument.
Step into the heart of Winchester, Indiana, with this vintage-style sketch postcard featuring two of the town’s most beloved landmarks: the Randolph County Courthouse and the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. The illustration captures the courthouse’s elegant Second Empire design, with its ornate clock tower and mansard roof, alongside the 73-foot Civil War monument honoring Cavalry, Navy, Infantry, and Artillery service. The scene evokes local pride and the enduring stories of a community dedicated to preserving its history.
In 2005, when county commissioners voted to demolish the courthouse, a group of elderly local women known as the “Courthouse Girls of Farmland” posed for a kitsch fundraising nude calendar to raise awareness and protect the building. Their efforts were successful, leading to a major restoration completed in 2011 that rebuilt the iconic 132-foot clock tower and mansard roof.
Today, the courthouse and Civil War monument remain central features of the Winchester Courthouse Square Historic District. Produced after the introduction of ZIP codes in 1963, this collectible postcard is produced in a style popular in the early 1970s and s perfect for fans of architectural history, local heritage, and vintage Americana.
Created by Custom Graphic Products through Creeko Creations, Johnson Creek, Wisconsin 53038, this postcard not only highlights the landmarks themselves but also the extraordinary efforts that saved them. This postcard would look great framed, make a wonderful hostess gift, or make an excellent addition to any collection.
