Welcome Arch and Union Depot Denver Colorado
Step back in time with this rare vintage postcard featuring Denver’s iconic Welcome Arch, also known as the Mizpah Arch. This postcard captures the original design of the arch before its name change, making it a unique piece of history.
Dedicated on Independence Day, 1906, the Welcome Arch was a grand tribute to Denver’s citizens, standing proudly outside Union Station at 17th and Wynkoop Streets. Initially, both sides of the arch displayed “WELCOME” in bold letters. However, in 1908, the city-side inscription was changed to “MIZPAH” to offer a heartfelt farewell to departing visitors. The term “Mizpah” is derived from Genesis 31:49, symbolizing a blessing and a hope for reunion, making it a touching farewell message.
This postcard showcases the arch with its original “WELCOME” inscription, making it a rare collectible. The arch was impressive, spanning 17th Street with 2,194 light bulbs illuminating its grandeur.
Add this unique piece of Denver’s history to your collection and own a tangible connection to the past. Perfect for collectors of vintage postcards, historical memorabilia, and architectural enthusiasts.
