This 1947 postcard offers a rare glimpse of the ancient Native American Indian Mounds in St. Petersburg, Florida, with a hospital quietly standing in the background. These sacred mounds were built by the Tocobaga people, who lived along Florida’s Gulf Coast long before European contact. By the mid-20th century, modern development crept in, but scenes like this preserved a moment when the past and present still visibly coexisted. The contrast between the timeworn earthworks and the crisp, institutional lines of the hospital captures a fleeting, poignant piece of Florida history.

These mounds were constructed from centuries of discarded shells, bones, and pottery, serving as both refuse heaps and ceremonial sites.>Over time, many of these mounds were lost to development. Still, some, like the one near Mound Park Hospital, were preserved. Today, the hospital is known as Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, continuing its legacy of serving the community.

This linen postcard would look great framed, make a wonderful hostess gift, or make an excellent addition to any collection.
