1960s Duck Splashdown at Lake Delton, Wisconsin Dells

The Ho-Chunk people were the original inhabitants, living, hunting, and fishing along the river and leaving behind mounds and artifacts. Steamboats first carried visitors through the sandstone gorges, and later guided boat tours and amphibious duck rides expanded the ways travelers could experience the dramatic cliffs and waterways. Lake Delton itself became an important recreational centerpiece for mid-twentieth-century vacationers.
