Feel the splash and excitement of Wisconsin Dells with this vintage postcard capturing an Original Wisconsin Ducks vehicle entering Lake Delton. The image freezes the thrilling moment of “splashdown,” as the amphibious DUKW rolls from land directly into the water, sending up spray and delighting passengers onboard. Marketed with the slogan “Ride the Original Wisconsin Ducks – it’s fun galore,” these one-hour tours combined rugged woodland trails with scenic passages along the Wisconsin River and Lake Delton, offering visitors a true land-and-water adventure unique to the Dells.

The vehicle shown is an authentic GMC DUKW-353, originally built for World War II as an amphibious military transport. Beginning in 1946, these surplus military vehicles were repurposed for tourism, forming the Original Wisconsin Ducks fleet. Many of the ducks were named after famous WWII battles, reinforcing their military heritage while giving riders a sense of patriotic adventure. The dramatic water entry, or splashdown, became one of the most anticipated highlights of the tour and remains an iconic part of the experience.

The Wisconsin Dells region has a history stretching back thousands of years. The Ho-Chunk people were the original inhabitants, living, hunting, and fishing along the river and leaving behind mounds and artifacts. French explorers arrived in the seventeenth century, and by the 1800s the area had become a popular tourist destination. Steamboats first carried visitors through the sandstone gorges, and later guided boat tours and amphibious duck rides expanded the ways travelers could experience the dramatic cliffs and waterways. Lake Delton itself became an important recreational centerpiece for mid-twentieth-century vacationers.

This postcard was published by Trumble Photography of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, with photography by John A. Trumble. The studio helped define the visual identity of the Dells during the mid-century tourism boom, producing colorful souvenir postcards that captured the excitement, scenery, and attractions that drew families year after year.

This card preserves the energy of a classic splashdown moment, making it a wonderful collectible for fans of amphibious vehicles, mid-century travel, or the enduring adventure of Wisconsin Dells tourism. This postcard would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
