1950 Indian River Florida
1950 vintage lithograph postcard of the Indian River in Florida. The Indian River is a 121-mile-long brackish lagoon that is part of the Indian River Lagoon system, which itself is a segment of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. This lagoon stretches along the east coast of Florida, from the Ponce de Leon Inlet in New Smyrna Beach down to the St. Lucie Inlet.
Historically, the river was named Rio de Ais after the Ais Indian tribe, who lived along the coast. The river’s ecosystem is diverse, supporting a variety of wildlife and plant species. It includes several tributaries, such as Crane Creek, the Eau Gallie River, and the St. Sebastian River.
Indian River County, named after the lagoon, was established in 1925. The county seat is Vero Beach, known for its beautiful beaches and citrus industry. The region has a rich history, including early Spanish exploration and settlement and later development for agriculture and tourism.
