This vintage postcard from the 1940s captures the fertile land of Alaska’s Matanuska Valley, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Chugach Mountains.

During the Great Depression, $11 million from the Federal Emergency Relief Administration was used to establish the town of Palmer. As part of the New Deal-era resettlement project, 203 families were relocated from the struggling Iron Range region of Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. In May 1935, these families arrived in Palmer by train and ship, spending their first summer in a tent city. Each family drew lots for a 40-acre homestead, marking the beginning of their new lives as Alaskan farmers.

This historic postcard would make a beautiful framed piece or a meaningful addition to any collection.
