1910s. A vintage gallery card or postcard of a statue of Salambo and Matho. Carved marble. Ch Barrau, Salambo et Matho, Palais des Beaux Arts, Lille, France.
The subject of this work was taken from Gustave Flaubert's novel, Salammbô, published in 1862. The story takes place between 241–238 BC, during the war between Carthage and its mercenaries in revolt. The Libyan Mathô, the chief of the barbarian soldiers, fell in love with Salammbô, the daughter of his Carthaginian enemy Hamilcar Barca.
House in The Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille, France. It is one of the largest art museums in France and houses a collection of fine arts, modern art, and antiquities. Established at the beginning of the 19th century, it was one of the first museums created in France under the instructions of Napoleon.
This card would look great framed and be a nice addition to any collection.
