Capture the early literary history of Portland with this vibrant linen-era postcard featuring the Birthplace of Poet Longfellow. Located at the corner of Fore and Hancock Streets, this Federal-style house was built between 1786 and 1791 and was where the world-renowned American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in 1807. The image showcases the three-story home with its distinctive green siding and dark shutters, adorned with plaques honoring great literary figures like Homer, Virgil, and Dante. Sadly, this historic structure was demolished in 1955 to make way for the expansion of a local business.
