About This Vintage Postcard

The tranquil beauty of Assiniboine Park is bathed in the warm glow of sunset in this early 20th-century view from Winnipeg, Canada. The scene prominently features the original Pavilion, a grand Tudor-influenced structure that served as the park's central social hub after its completion in 1908. Its distinctive 90-foot central tower, which once housed a massive water tank for the park's irrigation system, rises above the dense canopy of mature trees and is perfectly reflected in the serene waters of the nearby duck pond. This peaceful landscape illustrates the English Landscape style favored by the park's early designers, offering a nostalgic look at a local icon before the original structure was tragically destroyed by fire in 1929.

Additional Information

This postcard is part of the "Bond Street Series" (No. W-17), published by the Valentine-Black Co. Ltd. of Toronto. The manufacturing date is narrowed to 1922–1929; while the series began earlier, the specific "VB" script logo and Bond Street branding seen on the back were most prevalent during the mid-to-late 1920s. The original Pavilion tower shown here was a casualty of a major fire in May 1929, which completely destroyed the building. A new pavilion was constructed on the same site in 1930 and remains a centerpiece of the park today. This card remains a rare visual record of the park's first architectural landmark during the height of its popularity as Winnipeg's premier gathering place.

This postcard would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
