About This Vintage Postcard

This vibrant color postcard presents a historical view of the Oley Reformed Church, a landmark of Pennsylvania German heritage in Spangsville. The congregation, one of the oldest in the Oley Valley, was organized on May 4, 1736, by Reverend John Philip Boehm. The impressive red-brick church building depicted was constructed in 1822 on land donated by John Lesher, a prominent early iron-master and French Huguenot. This card captures the church's distinctive architecture, including its soaring steeple and intricate rose window, set against the peaceful backdrop of the historic cemetery. As a mid-century reprint of a turn-of-the-century scene, it preserves a classic local view for a new generation of collectors.

Additional Information

This postcard is a 1941 reprint of an earlier historical view, identified by the Tichnor Brothers production code R-72509 on the back. Tichnor Brothers, a prominent Boston-based printing firm, often worked with local publishers like H. Winslow Fegley to reproduce classic architectural and historical scenes. The original photograph was taken by Fegley, a renowned Berks County journalist whose work preserved the visual history of the Pennsylvania Dutch country at the turn of the 20th century. This card is part of his "Historical Series" (A26). The Oley Reformed Church, now known as Salem United Church of Christ, remains a centerpiece of the Oley Valley National Historic District, celebrated for its well-preserved stone and brick architecture.

This postcard would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
