About This Vintage Postcard

Step into the elegant center of the capital of the Alps with this sweeping view of Victor Hugo Square in Grenoble. Created in 1885 on the former site of military barracks and old city walls this beautiful green square was named in honor of the legendary French novelist. The scene captures the square abundant vegetation and orderly chestnut trees framed by ornate turn of the century facades. Additional Information

The ND Phot. mark identifies this as a production from the Neurdein Frères studio. This Parisian publishing house was a major French producer of postcards during the early twentieth century. The manufacture date of this card is narrowed to the years between 1906 and 1910. The divided back format was adopted in France in 1904 and this specific layout with the vertical divider and open serif header was characteristic of the Neurdein firm during the late nineteen hundreds. Victor Hugo Square became the social and architectural center of Grenoble after its inauguration. The buildings shown feature decorative molded cement friezes which were a signature element of local architecture at the time.
