About This Postcard

This powerful view showcases the intricate Flamboyant Gothic architecture of the North Portal (Portail Nord) of Beauvais Cathedral in France. The image highlights the magnificent "Tree of Jesse" carved into the wooden doors and the elaborate stone tracery of the tympanum above. Built to be the tallest cathedral in the world, Beauvais is a marvel of medieval engineering, known for its soaring choir and the dramatic historical collapses that left it unfinished. This specific portal was designed by architect Martin Chambiges in the early 16th century and remains one of the most celebrated examples of late Gothic decorative art in Europe, featuring delicate stone "lace" and richly detailed religious iconography.

Additional Information

The manufacturing date for this card is narrowed to 1907–1914. While the publisher Neurdein Frères (ND Phot.) used various backs, this specific multi-lingual "World Back" template was standardized following the 1906 Universal Postal Union congress in Rome to facilitate international mailing. This card features the "North door" notation in pencil, likely added by an English-speaking collector. The portal itself is famous for the wooden doors carved by Jean Le Pot, which survived the French Revolution. Beauvais Cathedral remains an architectural curiosity as it consists only of a transept and choir, with the highest Gothic vault in the world reaching 158 feet.
