About This Vintage Postcard

Witness the towering elegance of Montmartre with this striking monochrome postcard featuring the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur and its imposing campanile. Perched on the highest natural point in Paris, this Romano-Byzantine masterpiece was built from travertine stone that naturally whitens when it rains, maintaining its brilliant appearance over the decades. The scene highlights the 83-meter-tall bell tower, which was completed in 1912 and designed specifically to house "La Savoyarde," one of the world's heaviest and largest functioning bells. This view captures the basilica during its final stages of development, standing as a monumental symbol of national reconciliation and hope following the turbulent Franco-Prussian War.

Additional Information

This remarkable World War I artifact was sent as "Soldier's Mail" by Corporal Geo. H. Hubert of the U.S. Army. Dated October 4, 1918, during the final weeks of the war, the message to Miss Florence Bernit in Leesport, Pennsylvania, reads: "Flo, We don't have much spare time. Am O.K. at present. Remember me to the bunch. 'G'." The card features a censor mark "O.K." signed by Lt. E. R. Williams, S.C., a standard requirement for American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) mail. The publisher, Neurdein et Cie., was a major French firm that documented the country's landmarks; this specific printing by Imprimerie Crété represents the wartime production of their famous "ND Phot" series.
