The inscription on the pedestal translates to "Stanislas the Benefactor, Grateful Lorraine, 1831." Interestingly, the original 18th-century statue of Louis XV that occupied this spot was destroyed during the French Revolution. Place Stanislas, along with the Place de la Carrière and Place d'Alliance, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983.
