1960s Aerial View of Kentucky Dam Vintage Postcard
Step into a sweeping aerial view of one of America’s great engineering achievements with this vintage postcard titled “Kentucky Dam on Kentucky Lake near Gilbertsville, Kentucky.” The image captures the immense structure stretching across the broad waters of the Tennessee River, forming a striking geometric line that divides the calm reservoir from the flowing river beyond. From above, the dam appears almost like a monumental staircase laid across the water, its pale concrete surfaces contrasting beautifully with the deep blue tones of the surrounding lake.
On one side of the dam, the waters of Kentucky Lake spread outward in a wide, glassy expanse, reflecting the sky and distant shoreline. Its creation formed Kentucky Lake, a vast reservoir covering roughly 160,000 acres and recognized as the largest artificial lake by surface area in the eastern United States. Beyond generating hydroelectric power, the dam also improved navigation along the Tennessee River and helped control flooding throughout the region.
This postcard was produced by Mid South Products of Paris, Tennessee, using Plastichrome Colourpicture printing from Boston, Massachusetts, a process known for its bright colors and crisp photographic detail that helped define many scenic American postcards of the mid twentieth century.
