Step into the heart of Milwaukee’s south side with this vintage postcard showcasing the majestic Basilica of St. Josaphat, as seen from Kosciuszko Park. Completed in 1901 by Polish immigrants, the basilica was consecrated in 1928 and elevated to its status by Pope Pius XI in 1929. Modeled after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, it features a massive copper dome that dominates the skyline, marble altars and pulpit, and grand dimensions: 216 feet long and 116 feet wide, with seating for 1,840 worshippers.

In an impressive feat of early 20th-century engineering, construction materials were salvaged from the dismantled Chicago Post Office and Customs House and transported by rail to Milwaukee, allowing the basilica to rise with both grandeur and historical significance. Kosciuszko Park provides a sweeping foreground in this image, highlighting the basilica as a centerpiece of the local community and a landmark of Polish-American heritage.

Produced as a natural color postcard by E. C. Kropp Co. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this card captures the ornate architectural details and timeless elegance of one of the Midwest’s most celebrated religious structures. A striking addition to any collection of architectural landmarks, Polish-American history, or Milwaukee memorabilia, it would display beautifully framed in a study, living space, or gallery wall.
