Step behind the scenes of Pittsburgh’s streetcar system with this collectible railroad postcard featuring PAT line car M-210 at South Hills Junction in 1974. This specialized work trolley, equipped with a roof-mounted tower, performed the vital task of maintaining and repairing the overhead wires that powered the city’s streetcars. A unique piece of transit history, this postcard captures a vehicle that rarely appears in standard collections, making it a perfect addition for trolley and railroad enthusiasts alike.

Line car M-210 was built in 1940 at Pittsburgh Railways’ Homewood Shops using salvaged parts from older cars, including trucks and control equipment from car 4306 and tower components from car M1. It served Pittsburgh Railways and, after 1964, the Port Authority of Allegheny County. During its decades of service, M-210 was outfitted with radio equipment in the 1970s and upgraded with computerized controls in 1989.

This photograph shows the car in action at South Hills Junction, a key point on the system, reflecting the everyday work that kept Pittsburgh’s trolleys running smoothly. After being retired in 1995, M-210 was preserved at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, where it remains a cherished example of street railway maintenance history.

This collectible railroad postcard preserves the charm and ingenuity of mid-century trolley operations and would display beautifully framed or make a memorable addition to any streetcar, trolley, or Pennsylvania transit collection.
