1959 “Virginia City, Montana” Street Scene by Art Brown
This scene from Virginia City brings Montana’s territorial past to life. A horse-drawn stagecoach rolls through the dusty main street, pulled by a strong team and topped with two men—one gripping a rifle, watching the street below. The bustling town includes recognizable landmarks like the Bale & Hay Saloon and the Opera House, with townsfolk milling about and a horse rearing back dramatically in the foreground. The composition captures a lively, unpredictable day in a Western boomtown, where saloons, culture, and sudden trouble coexisted on the same stretch of road.
This is a 1959 reproduction of an original etching by Montana cowboy artist Art Brown. Raised near Great Falls and born in 1911, Brown spent much of his later life in Virginia City itself, sketching its characters, buildings, and stories. Self-taught and deeply rooted in the world he drew, Brown's work was honest, rough-edged, and often laced with dry humor. Though he died with little to his name, his art, compared by many to Charles Russell’s, preserves the spirit of Montana’s early days with unmatched authenticity.
This postcard would look great framed, make a wonderful host or hostess gift, or make an excellent addition to any collection.
