About This Vintage Postcard

The monumental scale of Philadelphia’s City Hall is captured here in a striking early 20th-century view. This color lithograph emphasizes the architectural grandeur of the Second Empire style, from its ornate mansard roofs to the towering central clock tower topped by the statue of William Penn. The composition highlights the building as a solitary anchor of the urban landscape, with the surrounding streets shown in a rare moment of quiet transition. The muted, atmospheric sky serves to enhance the intricate masonry and the imposing silhouette of what was then the world's tallest habitable building, preserving a truly gorgeous and powerful image of Philadelphia's civic heart.

Additional Information

Based on visual markers, this postcard was published during the Divided Back Era, specifically between 1907 and 1909. The vertical line and "For Correspondence" instructions confirm it was made after March 1, 1907, when the U.S. Post Office first permitted messages on the address side. While the original image series carried a 1904 copyright, the divided back format confirms this physical card was printed for the 1907 market change. As publisher J. Murray Jordan passed away in 1909, cards bearing his direct imprint at 1438 South Penn Square were published before the end of that year.

This vintage postcard would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
