12L Set of Two Victorian Faceted Black Glass Dimi Shank Buttons, 5/16"
Set of two elegant antique Victorian-era black glass diminutive buttons—tiny glossy jet-black. Faceted face, each measuring approximately 5/16" (12L / 7.6 mm) across, charming survivors from the late 1800s–early 1900s!
These classic one-piece molded glass buttons feature integrated self-shanks and thread grooves, indicative of Bohemian "French Jet" styles created to imitate costly real jet during the widespread mourning fashions of the era.
Most likely crafted in Bohemia (Czech region), renowned for Victorian black glass production. A wonderful large matched set in excellent antique condition—overall uniformity, shiny, with only minimal age wear.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, high-button boots were a fashion staple for women, men, and children, often featuring 10–20+ tiny buttons along the side for closure (fastened with a buttonhook). Black glass buttons—molded in glossy "French Jet" style from Bohemia—served as an affordable imitation of expensive real jet (a fossilized wood gemstone popular for mourning wear after Queen Victoria's influence). These simple glass buttons were practical, durable, and widely used on everyday leather or fabric boots, particularly for mourning attire, children's shoes, or functional designs.
Perfect for restoring high-button boots or gaiters, doll clothing, historical mourning sewing, jewelry crafting, or button collecting (NBS Division I: Black Glass Diminutives).
