This deckle edge vintage postcard captures the dramatic coastal scenery of Thunder Hole in Acadia National Park Maine on Mount Desert Island near Bar Harbor. Waves from the Atlantic Ocean surge into a narrow rocky channel, creating bursts of white sea foam that crash against massive jagged rock formations in shades of reddish-brown and deep mauve. The vertical cliff faces rise sharply, casting shadowed walls that frame the turbulent water.

Several visitors dot the rocks, giving scale to the scene. A man stands on a high ledge gazing out at the crashing waves while others sit or stand on lower rocks, watching the ocean’s power. Their mid-century attire adds a nostalgic feel, placing the scene firmly in the 1960s and 1970s.

Taken from an elevated vantage point, the photo emphasizes the contrast between the solid, immovable granite and the dynamic motion of the ocean spray. The scalloped white border and slightly warm, saturated colors are characteristic of the “chrome” style postcards of the era.

This image was colorized by Ray Goodrich and published by Eastern Illustrating Co. of New London New Hampshire. Production was completed by Dexter Press Inc., West Nyack New York, reflecting the high-quality postcard standards of the period.

This postcard would look great framed or make a great addition to any collection.
