About This Vintage Postcard

There is a profound solemnity in seeing the ivy draped vault where a nation first said goodbye to its fallen leader before his grand monument was ever built. This image captures the temporary receiving vault at West Lawn Cemetery in Canton, Ohio where the body of President William McKinley rested following his assassination in 1901. A lone guard stands watch at the entrance a moving reminder of the heavy grief that once hung over this quiet corner of Ohio.

Additional Information

This card is a rare example of a postcard where the photographer also acted as the publisher and printer. J. Murray Jordan operated his own publishing house in Philadelphia at 1438 S. Penn Square where he maintained full artistic control over his work using methods like the halftone process. The military honor guard shown provided a 24 hour watch over the President body from 1901 until 1907 a vigil that influenced the permanent assignment of Secret Service protection for sitting presidents. The reverse features an ornate scrollwork banner typical of Jordan early self produced series.

The handwritten message on the front reads: Love from Laura and Minnie.

This would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
