About This Postcard

This vintage Postal Card postcard is the Scott #UX18, first issued in 1902 to commemorate President William McKinley following his assassination in 1901. It is easily identifiable by the profile portrait of McKinley on the right and the large United States seal on the left.

Antique handwritten message dated January 10, 1906, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, written as personal correspondence beginning “Dear Cousin Will.” This original early 20th century message contains a detailed account of a serious accident involving the recipient’s mother and references a potential witness who assisted her and may have information about the incident.

The writer explains that the young man, identified as Charles Sanford, helped lift the injured woman and suggests there may have been negligence involving a contractor who had blocked and then reopened a crossing shortly before the accident. The letter appears to have been written to share potentially important information for further inquiry, giving it a compelling real-life narrative beyond typical family correspondence.
