Step into the adventurous spirit of Wisconsin Dells with this vintage postcard featuring the Original Wisconsin Ducks vehicle “Gen MacArthur” entering the Wisconsin River. The image captures a thrilling moment as the Duck transitions from land into the water, illustrating the unique amphibious experience that made these tours so popular. Marketed with the slogan “Ride the Original Wisconsin Ducks – it’s fun galore,” the tours combined scenic river passages with rugged land trails, offering visitors an unforgettable way to explore the sandstone cliffs and gorges of the Dells.

The vehicle pictured, “Gen MacArthur,” is an authentic GMC DUKW-353 amphibious truck, originally built for World War II beach landings and troop transport. Starting in 1946, surplus DUKWs were adapted for tourism in Wisconsin Dells, giving rise to the Original Wisconsin Ducks. Named after General Douglas MacArthur, this Duck highlights the company’s practice of giving many vehicles names connected to famous WWII leaders or battles. Passengers riding “Gen Mac Arthur” experienced the same rugged capabilities designed for military operations, transformed into a safe and thrilling sightseeing adventure.

The Wisconsin Dells region has a history stretching back thousands of years. The Ho-Chunk people were the original inhabitants, leaving behind mounds and artifacts along the river. French explorers arrived in the seventeenth century, and by the nineteenth century the area became a popular tourist destination. Steamboats first brought visitors to admire the cliffs and gorges, and over time guided riverboats and amphibious Duck tours added new ways to experience the region’s dramatic landscapes.

This postcard was published by Trumble Photography of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, with photography credited to John A. Trumble. The mid-1960s image number and credit suggest production during the studio’s later John A. Trumble period, when the Ducks tours were already well established and drawing multigenerational visitors.

This card captures both the playful adventure and the historic military roots of the Original Wisconsin Ducks, making it a collectible for fans of amphibious vehicles, WWII history, and the scenic landscapes of Wisconsin Dells. This postcard would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
