Step back to the dawn of modern naval aviation with this striking collectible postcard featuring a formation of Vought SB2U Vindicator dive bombers in flight.

The Vought SB2U Vindicator was the first monoplane dive bomber used by the U.S. Navy. Entering service in 1937, it marked a major transition from the fabric-covered biplanes of the early 1930s to the more advanced all-metal aircraft that would soon dominate World War II skies.

This image shows three Vindicators flying in formation, likely in the late 1930s or very early 1940s, as suggested by their pre-war U.S. Navy markings. The aircraft carried a crew of two and were capable of delivering a 1,000-pound bomb, giving the Navy a powerful new strike capability at the time.

Although becoming obsolete by the time the United States entered World War II, the Vindicator remained in service through 1942. It served as an important bridge between aviation eras, paving the way for the more advanced dive bombers that followed.
