Napoleon III Champlevé Emaux Peints Hooks, Set of Eight

Set of eight gilt-brass champlevé enamel hooks dating to 1850–1880, from the French Second Empire to the early Belle Époque period, Napoleon III era. Each miniature face measures approximately 5/8" and features delicately hand-painted pink roses on a luminous blue background.

These hooks are a rare example of mid-19th-century decorative arts, combining technical mastery, artistic refinement, and functional design. The champlevé process involves engraving the brass, filling the recesses with enamel, firing, and gilding, creating a durable, radiant surface. Complete sets of this quality and size are exceptionally rare.

Originally, pieces like these may have been used as fasteners for chatelaines, skirt lifts, or decorative attachments on waistcoats or breeches. The set demonstrates the period’s attention to symmetry and style, reflecting the tastes of high society.

Condition: One hook shows a discreet solder repair on the reverse, while the remainder remain in excellent condition. Please see the images.
