Victory Dress – Circa 1923
Price Available Upon Request: Serious Inquiries Only
A singular artifact of historical and cultural significance, this “Victory Dress” is crafted from hyperinflated German currency of 1923, a period of extraordinary social and economic upheaval. Each note used in its construction, including the infamous “Vampire Notes,” tells a story of resilience, satire, and defiance. When rotated, the notes reveal a hidden face with an open mouth, a haunting visual metaphor for the economic devastation wrought by the Treaty of Versailles.
Likely worn during Germany’s 1923 Carnival (Fastnacht), this dress represents a rare form of protest art, combining ingenuity and audacity in response to national crisis. It is one of only two known examples in existence, the other preserved in the Bundesbank Money Museum collection, making this an extraordinary acquisition for serious collectors of historical textiles or numismatic artifacts.
