This vintage postcard captures Santa Fe’s historic Plaza, a central square that has borne witness to centuries of dramatic events in the American Southwest. In the background stands the adobe walls of the Palace of the Governors, a structure as enduring as the stories tied to this ground. The Plaza itself, calm and sunlit in this image, was once the site of conflict, celebration, and shifting empires.

In 1680, Pueblo Indians launched a successful revolt against Spanish rule, besieging the Spaniards within the very building pictured here. The Spanish fled south to Mexico, only to return sixteen years later when General De Vargas reconquered the territory, reclaiming it for the Spanish Crown with a formal declaration made right on this square. The Plaza saw yet another chapter of history in 1846 when General Stephen Kearny claimed the entire region, including California, for the United States during the Mexican-American War.

At its center stands the Soldiers’ Monument, erected during the post-Civil War era, notable for being one of the few monuments in the country to refer to Confederates as "Rebels"—a detail that has sparked both historical curiosity and modern debate.

This would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
