There’s a timeless joy in the sound of bells at Christmastime, an echo of celebration, of warmth, and of welcome. In this 1915 postcard, that symbolism takes center stage in a beautifully detailed design by beloved illustrator Ellen H. Clapsaddle, her signature faintly visible at the bottom right.

A single golden bell, rich with ornate detailing, hangs proudly at the heart of the composition. Bells have long symbolized joy and the announcement of good news—once rung to mark special occasions, they later came to represent the spiritual call of the season and the promise of peace. Here, the bell is framed by sprigs of holly and mistletoe, their textures and colors offering a striking contrast: deep green leaves and bright red berries for the holly, and softer green foliage with delicate white berries for the mistletoe.

Above the arrangement, a white ribbon banner carries the greeting “A Merry Christmas,” gently draped like a festive garland. This antique postcard would look great framed and make a wonderful hostess gift, a delightful stocking stuffer, a unique holiday decoration, or an excellent addition to any collection.
