Vintage Hand-Stitched Rayon Chirimen Kimono, Hōmongi / Tsukesage – Japan, circa 1965–1985

A rare and exceptionally refined full-length woman’s kimono from Japan’s mid-Shōwa period, executed in heavyweight rayon chirimen (pebble-crepe rayon) of the highest quality. The ground is a profound smoky eggplant with subtle brown undertones that shift between deep aubergine and near-black depending on the light,  an intensely sophisticated colour extremely prized in post-war Japanese design. Over this dramatic field floats a delicate, all-over-printed pattern of abstract geometric motifs in pale gold and mustard yellow, creating a quiet yet unmistakable mid-century elegance.

What elevates this piece to collector status is that it is entirely hand-stitched - every seam, hem, collar, and lining attachment - an extraordinary feature for a rayon kimono of this era, when nearly all were machine-sewn for mass production. This level of handwork indicates a custom or premium atelier commission, even in synthetic fabric.

The kimono drapes beautifully, with the characteristic weight and matte luminosity that made 1960s–1980s rayon chirimen so sought-after by stylish Japanese women for semi-formal occasions. Equally striking worn as a dramatic bohemian evening robe or displayed as a minimalist textile artwork.
