1907 State Capitol House Providence Rhode Island
This stunning 1907 vintage postcard featuring the Rhode Island State House in Providence captures the grandeur of one of America’s architectural gems.
The Rhode Island State House is a magnificent example of neoclassical architecture, designed by the renowned firm McKim, Mead & White. The building is constructed from white Georgia marble and features the fourth-largest self-supported marble dome in the world. The grand columns and steps leading up to the entrance, along with the American flags flying atop flagpoles, add to its majestic appearance.
Completed in 1904, the Rhode Island State House was one of the first public buildings to use electricity, making it a pioneer in modern infrastructure. The building has served as the seat of Rhode Island’s government.
This is an early divided back postcard, with a space on the front for messages. It used to be illegal to write anything but the address on the back of a postcard, so the public was adjusting to the divided back due to the 1907 change in regulations. This publisher provided space on the front as well as on the back; an indication of this transition in postal card history.
For stamp collectors: The back side features a cancelled one-cent postage stamp featuring Benjamin Franklin. This stamp is part of the Washington-Franklin Issues.
This would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
