1907 Post Office & Fire Station Providence Rhode Island

This vintage 1907 postcard showcases two significant buildings in Providence, Rhode Island: the Central Fire Station and the New Post Office. The Central Fire Station, constructed in 1873, was a notable example of late 19th-century civic architecture. It featured a distinctive clock tower and multi-colored stonework, reflecting the era's design sensibilities. The New Post Office, completed in 1908, was an imposing structure with large windows and an elegant facade, embodying the architectural trends of the early 20th century.

These buildings no longer stand today. The Central Fire Station was demolished in 1938, and the Post Office Annex now occupies the site at 2 Exchange Terrace. The New Post Office building has also been replaced by newer developments. Despite their absence, these structures remain an important part of Providence’s architectural history, captured beautifully in this postcard.

Also of interest to Philately stamp collectors: a cancelled Scott catalog #328, green 1-cent stamp is also found on the reverse. The stamp commemorates the 300th anniversary of Jamestown's founding, the first permanent English settlement in America.
