Vintage late 1940s to 1950s celluloid coat buttons – set of four.

A matched set of four vintage celluloid coat buttons dating from the late 1940s to the 1950s. Each medium button measures approximately 27.3 mm (43 lignes, 1 inch) in diameter, making a bold statement for coats or jacket fronts. Made in the United States, likely in Northeast industrial centers such as New Jersey, Connecticut, or New York, these buttons reflect the post-World War II boom in ready-to-wear outerwear, when companies used celluloid to create affordable, eye-catching designs.

The design is strikingly Brutalist-inspired, featuring a central raised triangle framed by a border of small raised bubbles or dots. The triangle is a bold aspect of the overall "raw concrete" or textured Brutalist vibe. The opaque marbled tan and beige body with darker veining evokes raw concrete textures, reflecting the geometric honesty and unadorned aesthetic of mid-century Brutalism, which influenced both architecture and fashion accessories.

Construction is typical of mid-century U.S. mass-production techniques. The main body is opaque and mottled, while the applied translucent plastic loop shank provides durability on heavy fabrics. A small darker attachment point at the base is standard, and a rectangular mold remnant (gate mark) near the shank is a normal feature from injection molding.

These buttons are in excellent condition for their age, with no cracks or chips. They are ideal not only for collectors of mid-century modern or Brutalist-inspired accessories but also for practical sewing projects as replacement buttons on vintage coats, jackets, or other outerwear.

This matched set of four captures the raw, geometric power of mid-century design, offering both functional and decorative value and making them a standout addition to any collection or wardrobe restoration.

Measure approximately 43L, 43 lignes, 27.3 mm, or 1".
