This striking vintage postcard presents a dazzling nighttime view of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge illuminated against the dark waters of San Francisco Bay. Long strings of glowing lights trace the sweeping lines of the bridge as automobiles cross the span, their reflections shimmering on the surface below. The brilliant sodium vapor lighting creates a radiant pathway across the bay, designed to cut through the region’s famous fog and guide travelers safely between the cities of San Francisco and Oakland.

Completed in 1936, the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge quickly became one of the most impressive engineering achievements in the United States. Built at a cost of ninety seven million dollars, the massive double deck structure was designed to handle the growing traffic demands of the Bay Area.

The upper deck carried six lanes of automobile traffic, while the lower deck accommodated truck lanes and interurban railway tracks that once connected communities across the bay. The western suspension span visible in this scene links San Francisco to Yerba Buena Island, forming part of the vital transportation route that reshaped travel throughout Northern California.

This postcard was published by Smith News Company of San Francisco and printed as a Mirro-Krome card by H.S. Crocker Co., Inc.,
