When winter winds sweep across open fields and the landscape turns to silver and white, a small, hardy bird flutters low over the snow like a drifting snowflake. This vintage National Wildlife Federation postcard captures that stark, beautiful moment. An Eastern Snow Bunting poised against a wintry backdrop, its pale plumage blending softly with the season it calls home. The scene feels crisp and quiet, evoking wide northern skies and the peaceful stillness of winter’s open country.

Produced around 1950 as part of the Wildbird Series by the National Wildlife Federation, this collectible features artwork signed “Weber,” referring to noted wildlife artist Walter A. Weber. Weber created numerous bird illustrations and conservation stamps for the Federation, and his detailed, lifelike renderings remain highly regarded among collectors.

The subject, the Eastern Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis), is a small northern songbird known for its white plumage accented with warm tawny tones in winter. Breeding farther north than nearly any other passerine, it becomes a familiar sight in snowy fields, windswept farmland, and along coastal seawalls during the colder months.
