Material: Celluloid, considered the first widely used plastic, was introduced commercially around 1880. It became especially popular for buttons, jewelry, and decorative items from the 1920s through the 1940s. Because celluloid is highly flammable, its use declined after the 1950s in favor of safer, modern plastics.

Origin: United States

Uses: Popular for home sewing, feed sack dresses and ready-to-wear fashion, these buttons reflect interwar and WW2 era U.S. manufacturing in celluloid, the first widely used plastic.
