1945 vintage postcard. Mount Vernon, the home of President George Washington, is on the Virginia shore of the Potomac, 16 miles south of Washington, D. C. The house was built in 1743 by Lawrence, George Washington's half-brother. George Washington lived at Mount Vernon from 1759 until he died in 1799.
