Set of five 1920s to 1940s antique Trochus shell buttons. These two-hole, sew-through small shell buttons have a rich, feminine luster and a round center eye.

Measure approximately: 19L, 19 lignes, 12 mm, or 15/32" (close to 1/2").

Material: Trochus shell. Genuine mother-of-pearl (MOP). From the sea snail Trochus Niloticus. Trochus produces a thick, strong, creamy nacre that's used for high-quality carved buttons.

Color: A creamy pale beige to light pinkish-beige color, subtle iridescence, and a smooth, slightly shiny nacre appearance. Not dyed, all natural.

Era: 1920-40s

Origin: Japan. In 1920s Japan became a major processor, turning Australian/Pacific trochus into finished buttons exported worldwide.

Uses: These buttons were most often used to fasten lightweight lingerie, bed jackets, and feminine blouses and shirtwaist dresses made of lightweight fabric.
