Historical Background

Muller Frères Lunéville was an elite French glassmaking company famed for its highly collectible Art Nouveau and Art Deco art glass. Comprising nine brothers and one sister originally from Alsace, the family established its legacy primarily in the town of Lunéville, France. The elder brothers trained under the famous Art Nouveau master Émile Gallé in Nancy. They formed their own workshop in 1897.

Further Technical Information

While other glass studios of the period used a machine plunger forcefully stamped the molten, streaked glass directly into a metal mold, Muller Frères treated cloud glass as a highly precise, hand-blown fine art form.

To create their cloud glass, the Muller brothers rolled a hand-blown core of molten glass in crushed colored powders, trapped those pigments under a second layer of clear glass, and blew the vessel into shape. This internal layering caused the colors to melt and stretch into natural, smoky swirls. Finally, they dipped the cooled glass into an acid bath to strip its shine, leaving a frosty, matte surface that mimicked drifting clouds.
