Set of three 1920s vintage red casein buttons. These two-hole, sew-through buttons were salvaged from a badly damaged 1920s beach pajama top.

Material: Casein. Invented in 1897, Casein milk plastics are a type of plastic made from a protein called casein found in milk. They were popular in the early 1900s, but making it was a slow process, and after World War II, newer plastics became more popular. The production of casein plastics all but ended after 1945.
Origin: United States, Casein production flourished in the 1920s and 1930s.
Uses: Ideal for pajamas, dresses, decorative craft projects, historical garment restorations, and they are a rare collectible example of early milk-plastic craftsmanship.
