14L Set of Five 1880-1910 Faceted Black Glass Dimi Mourning Buttons, 3/8"
A beautiful set of five antique black glass buttons produced in the renowned Jablonec nad Nisou (formerly Gablonz) region of Bohemia, now the Czech Republic. This area was the world’s leading center for glass button production from the late 18th century through the early 20th century, exporting millions of finely crafted designs worldwide.
This set of buttons feature integral molded glass self-shanks with four-way thread channels, a hallmark of Czech production from the late Victorian to early Edwardian period. The shanks are finished with gold enamel, adding a refined, metallic look seen in higher-quality examples. Measuring approximately 14 lignes (about 8.8–9 mm / 3⁄8"), this diminutive size was commonly used for fine garments.
These are very likely mourning buttons. Deep black, faceted glass buttons were widely worn during the Victorian mourning period, particularly after Queen Victoria popularized black attire following Prince Albert’s death in 1861. Bohemian glassmakers became famous for producing high-quality yet affordable “jet imitation” buttons and accessories. While black glass was also fashionable beyond mourning wear, the color, faceted form, and small scale strongly align with mourning-era designs.
Measure approximately 14 lignes, 8.8 mm., or 3/8".
