Frozen in time from 1899, this striking image captures the sheer scale of California’s giant sequoias as Troop F of the 6th U.S. Cavalry maneuvers like toy soldiers across the massive, uprooted base of the "Fallen Monarch." Long before the National Park Service existed, these cavalrymen served as Yosemite’s first guardians.
