Domḗnikos Theotokópoulos, widely known as El Greco (“The Greek”), was a Greek painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. Born in Crete in 1541, then under Venetian rule, he first trained as an icon painter in the post-Byzantine tradition before moving to Venice, where he was influenced by Titian, Tintoretto, and Bassano. After a period in Rome studying the works of Michelangelo and Raphael, El Greco settled permanently in Toledo, Spain, in 1577, where he created his most celebrated works and became an acclaimed portraitist.

The building shown on this postcard represents an early image of the Casa del Greco (House of El Greco) in Toledo’s Jewish Quarter. It is not El Greco’s original home, which no longer exists, but an early 20th-century reconstruction commissioned by the Marquis de la Vega-Inclán to honor the artist’s legacy. The site later became the El Greco Museum (Museo del Greco), which still stands today.

This beautifully printed antique postcard captures the romantic charm of early 1900s Toledo and would look excellent framed or as a highlight in any collection of fine art or Spanish history postcards.
