These small antique shank buttons date to the late Victorian through Edwardian period, circa 1880s–1910s. These buttons were most commonly used on high-button boots for both women and men, fastened with a buttonhook, and were also found on gloves, gaiters, and spats, which were essential accessories in Victorian and Edwardian dress. While they could be used on cuffs or children’s garments, their strongest association is with late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century footwear and related accessories.

The surface shows authentic age-related crazing along with scattered black speckles and mottled dark patches. This appearance is typical of period ceramic glazes and results from kiln firing variations combined with decades of use, with natural staining settling into fine craze lines over time. The finish is a true fired glaze rather than later paint, giving the buttons a durable, slightly glossy surface and an appealing antique patina.

On the reverse is a simple wire loop shank, a practical and common construction of the era designed for sewing. Minor chips, glaze wear, and surface patina are present and consistent with everyday use over more than a century.

They were produced using practical, mass-market ceramic techniques intended for durability and affordability rather than decoration. Examples like these were widely manufactured in Central Europe, particularly Germany or Bohemia, now the Czech Republic, which were major exporters of glazed ceramic buttons during this period. These are genuine late nineteenth- to early twentieth-century ceramic buttons suitable for antique clothing restoration, period costuming, or collecting.
