1920s Black Tower Caernarfon Castle Wales Vintage Postcard
About This Vintage Postcard
Witness the formidable medieval strength of Caernarfon Castle with this atmospheric monochrome study of the Black Tower. Part of the legendary "Iron Ring" of fortresses built by Edward I, the tower is shown here with its distinctive polygonal design and heavy stone battlements rising sharply against the Welsh sky. The scene captures the intricate masonry and narrow arrow slits of the castle's southern curtain wall, illustrating the masterful military engineering of James of Saint George. As a UNESCO World Heritage site and the traditional location for the investiture of the Prince of Wales, the castle remains one of Britain's most significant royal monuments. This evocative composition highlights the stark, rugged textures of the stone, beautifully preserved through the high-quality printing of the early interwar period.

Additional Information
The manufacturing date for this card is attributed to the 1920s. It was published by H.M. Office of Works, the government department responsible for the care of historic monuments before the creation of Cadw. The "JV" code and the number 85793 on the front identify this as part of the Valentine and Sons "Sepiatype" series, printed in Dundee and London. Valentine's used the photogravure process to achieve the deep, velvety sepias and exceptional architectural detail seen here. Caernarfon is unique among Edwardian castles for its multi-colored stone banding and polygonal towers, designed to echo the walls of Constantinople and project an image of imperial authority. The uncirculated back features a minimalist layout typical of official government-authorized series from the interwar years.
This postcard would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
