About This Vintage Postcard

This postcard shows the Chancel in Holy Trinity Church. The church is where William Shakespeare was baptized and buried. The image shows the Perpendicular Gothic windows and the high altar. On the left wall is the funerary monument of Shakespeare. The Chancel was built between 1480 and 1491. It has stone carvings and stained glass. The card shows the atmosphere of the Stratford-upon-Avon landmark during the Golden Age of postcards.

The card was made between 1910 and 1918. The "Half-Penny Stamp" instruction dates the card. The domestic postcard rate in Britain increased to one penny in June 1918. Harvey Barton and Son was a firm known for collotype views. Shakespeare’s grave is located on the floor of this Chancel. The inscription includes a curse to anyone who moves his bones. Dean Thomas Balshall originally constructed the Chancel. His altar tomb is visible in this composition.
