About This Vintage Postcard

This early 20th-century view captures the historic Place Saint-Andre in Grenoble, France, featuring a striking architectural dialogue between church and state. To the left stands the Collegiate Church of Saint-Andre, a 13th-century Gothic landmark with its iconic soaring masonry spire. On the right is the Palais de Justice, the former seat of the Parliament of Dauphine, which showcases a masterpiece of Flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance design. In the center of the square, the statue of the legendary knight Bayard, the "chevalier sans peur et sans reproche," watches over the heart of the old city.

Additional Information

The production date is narrowed to 1913-1918 based on the publisher's imprint on the central divider. The card was published by Levy et Neurdein Reunis, a firm formed by the 1913 merger of two of France's most prestigious studios. While the front carries the original LL (Leon & Levy) series number 173, the back confirms the unified company address at 44 Rue Letellier in Paris. The uncirculated condition perfectly preserves the intricate carvings of the palace facade and the early street-level signage for a local "Eau & Gaz" (Water & Gas) utility shop visible next to the church.
