Mount Vernon, the historic home and final resting place of George Washington, stands as one of America’s most important landmarks, symbolizing the leadership and vision that shaped the nation. This vintage postcard captures the grandeur of the Banquet Hall, also known as the New Room, where high ceilings and formal neoclassical design are accented by striking verdigris green walls bordered near the ceiling with delicate white plaster swags that resemble draping necklaces of flowers and beads. A three-part Venetian window dominates one side of the room, its tall arched center flanked by rectangular panes, dressed in forest-green velvet swags and flowing white curtains that softly touch the polished hardwood floor.

Dark wood Hepplewhite chairs line the walls while a central table displays a pair of blue-and-white porcelain vases. The ceiling’s pale plaster is adorned with intricate low-relief geometric and floral carvings, creating a sense of height and refinement, while patterned oriental rugs add warmth to the space. The overall scene reflects the elegance and sophistication of 18th-century formal entertaining.

Color photography by Walter H. Miller brings crisp detail and richness to this historic interior. Preserved by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association of the Union since 1853, the estate allows visitors to experience the Banquet Hall much as Washington intended, with its Venetian window overlooking the Potomac River and furnishings that reflect the grandeur of the new American republic.

This would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
