This vivid vintage postcard captures the excitement of an ocean liner entering the harbor of Quebec City, where the historic skyline rises dramatically above the waters of the Saint Lawrence River. The massive white ship dominates the foreground while the elevated rooftops and towers of Old Quebec form a striking backdrop. Crowning the skyline is the legendary Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, the grand château-style hotel that has defined the city’s silhouette since the nineteenth century and remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in Canada.

A closer look at the vessel provides a fascinating clue to the postcard’s era. The liner is the elegant RMS Empress of Canada, a transatlantic passenger ship that began service in April 1961. Its distinctive yellow funnel with a blue band was the signature livery of the Canadian Pacific Line during the early 1960s. That color scheme was replaced in 1968 with a new green “multimark” design, placing this photograph squarely within the years between 1961 and 1967 when ships of the line still arrived in this classic form. Another small but telling detail appears along the waterfront, where the red Sico sign rises above the docks, a familiar industrial landmark in the harbor during that period.

Scenes like this were common during the golden years of transatlantic travel, when passenger liners regularly called at Quebec before continuing inland toward Montreal. Even though some copies of this postcard were mailed years later, the photograph itself preserves a moment from the lively harbor life of the mid-1960s, when ocean liners and the historic skyline created one of the most memorable arrivals in North America.

This Plastichrome postcard was produced by Colourpicture Publishers Inc. and edited by Agence Provinciale of Quebec, reflecting the vibrant chrome printing style popular during the era. It would display beautifully framed or make a wonderful addition to any vintage Quebec, ocean liner, or travel postcard collection.
