1944 Hotel Mayfair and St. Johns River Citrus, Sanford, Florida
Step into the sunlit charm of Sanford on the shores of Lake Monroe, where elegant hospitality and Florida’s famed citrus groves meet. This vintage postcard features the Mediterranean Revival Hotel Mayfair in downtown Sanford, paired with a delightful message-side advertisement for Arthur A. Kirchhoff’s tree-ripened oranges and grapefruit, including tangerines when available. Offered by the bushel at $4.50 delivered, the note invites orders directly from the hotel, reflecting a time when fresh Florida citrus was mailed across the country and hotels played a key role in connecting visitors to local treasures.
The Hotel Mayfair opened in 1925 as the Hotel Forrest Lake and was renamed in 1935, boasting arched Mediterranean Revival details and an atmosphere of early-20th-century Floridian glamour. In 1948, Horace Stoneham, owner of the New York Giants baseball team, purchased the hotel for spring training, further entwining it with Florida’s vibrant history of tourism and sport.
Produced as a Colourpicture publication from Cambridge, Massachusetts, with Sanford, Florida permit no. 18 and one-cent postage paid, this postcard dates from the mid-1940s. Its combination of picturesque architecture and real historical commerce makes it especially appealing to collectors of Florida history, citrus memorabilia, or vintage travel cards.
This postcard would look great framed or make a wonderful addition to any vintage Florida, travel, or mid-century postcard collection.
